Statement by the President of the Republic of Macedonia, H.E. Dr. Gjorge Ivanov

Geneva, 10 May 2011

Statement by the President of the Republic of Macedonia, H.E. Dr. Gjorge Ivanov, on the occasion of the opening ceremony of the Third Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction and the World Reconstruction Conference

“…Disaster risk is a reality of today, and a real threat for tomorrow. A threat that can be solved only by fulfilling the commitments and numerous pledges our governments have taken in past decades. It is the most important responsibility of this generation to hand over a less vulnerable world to generations to come, just as Noah did for mankind on the summit of biblical Mount Ararat.

With this thought in mind, let me recall Einstein’s wisdom when he said: “We cannot solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.” It is up to this generation to adopt a different mindset so we can hand over a safer world to our children….”

Availing myself of this opportunity, I would like to share, with all previous speakers, my condolences to the people and government of Japan, and all Nations that have suffered from natural and man-made disasters in this deadly decade.
